To Be

Be is an irregular verb. Infinitive form (to be):

byť быть

Present forms can be omitted (they vanished in some languages):

Singular form (I am):

ja sem я сем

3rd person regular form (he/she is) animate:

Plural form (we are):

my sme мы сме

Animacy

Animate objects are alive or sentinent objects (answer question "who"), inanimate objects are items, things, terms etc (anwer question "what")

Examples

to je dobre, то є добре (it's good)

diete jes dobre, дьете єс добре (child is good)

ti ljudi su dobre, ти люди су добре (these people are good)

jest dobry deń, єст добры день (it[there] is a good day)

jest mnogo ljudi, єст много люди (there are many people)

Past form:

byl был

byl dobry deń, был добры день (it was a good day)

Feminine, neuter and plural adjectives must have suffixes so they can match the subject. See Past Tense

Examples

muž byl dobry, муж был добры (husband was good)

žena byla dobra, жена была добра (wife was good)

diete bylo dobre, дьете было добре (child was good)

bylo mnogo ljudi, было много люди (there were many people)

Declination

BE verb doesn't require Instrumental case but it can be used.

Instrumental exists only in Belarussian, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian:

On jest dobrym synem (He is a good son [Instrumental])

Nominative version (Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Slovak, Serbian, Slovene):

On jest dobry syn (He is a good son [Nominative])
