Gender

Slavic languages have three genders: masculine, feminine and neuter.

By default feminine nouns have suffix:

-a

žena, жена (woman/wife)

Also abstraction nouns are feminine:

-ost

budućnost, будућност (future)

aktivnost, активност (activity)

*There are few exceptions which you have to memorize: most мост (bridge M), gosť гость (guest M). kosť кость (bone F).

Neuter nouns have suffix:

-o -e

drevo, древо (tree), sklo, скло (glass)

diete, дете (child), letišče, летище (airport)

Masculine nouns have no specific suffix.

Examples

muž, муж (man/husband), alarm, аларм, partner, партнер

Feminization

Some nouns can be feminized with suffix:

-ka

partner партнер (partner M) partnerka партнерка (partner F)

student студент (student M) studentka студентка (student F)

učitel учител (teacher M) učitelka учителка (teacher F)

tancor танцор (dancer M) tancorka танцорка (dancer F)

policajt полицайт (policeman) policajtka полицайтка (policewoman)
