Modal Verbs

Verbs that express necessity or possibility and are accompanied with infinitive.

CAN:

може~ može~

muž može spať, муж може спать (husband can sleep)

MUST:

муси~ musi~

muž musi piť, муж муси пить (husband must drink)

WANT TO:

хоче~ hoče~

muž hoče znať, муж хоче знать (husband wants to know)

LIKE/PREFER TO:

воли~ voli~

muž voli ziskať, муж воли зискать (husband like/prefers to gain)

WISH TO:

жели~ želi~

aŭtor želi pisať, аўтор жели писать (author wishes to write)

LOVE TO:

люби~ ljubi~

NEED TO:

требуе~ trebuje~

vlak trebuje vracať, влак требуе врацать (train needs to return)

Modal Words

Modal words are not verbs, they convert the sentence to a modal form.

IT IS NECESSARY / ONE NEEDS:

треба treba

treba čekať, треба чекать (one needs/it is necessary to wait)

SHOULD:

повін povin

muž ne povin vidieť ženu, муж не повін видьеть жену (husband should not see wife)

DUE TO:

должен dolžen

("povin" and "dolžen" work like an adjective, it must match the gender -a feminine, -o neuter)

muž dolžen platiť, муж должен платить (husband is due to pay)

ona povina ..., она повіна ... (she should ...)

žena dolžna ..., жена должна ... (wife is due to ...)

to povino ..., то повіно ... (it should ...)
